So dancers have this phenomenon where we walk everywhere faster than the average population. It stems from a long history of trying to walk across a 25-meter stage in eight counts or less and from our instructors and coaches constantly yelling “walk with purpose!!!”
It’s super fun when you’re 5”2’ and have the legs of a munchkin from the wizard of Oz.
Nonetheless this didn’t stop us!
Although we had to drastically slow down our pace, on September 2nd our team got to participate in Calgary’s Annual Pride Parade! This gave our team an opportunity to show our love and support for Calgary’s diverse community, giving the phrase “walk with purpose” a whole new meaning.
Cub Cassie (right), a first-year veteran got the chance to be a part of the pride parade for the first time and was very ecstatic to be there
“This was my first pride parade and it was an overwhelming experience in the most positive way. [it was] overwhelming because I felt an immense amount of love in a safe place where every human being belonged. I’ve never felt so much positive energy in one space before. There was a point when we walked past protestors with religious signs and as we passed them the cheers got louder, the smiles got bigger, and I felt so empowered by love and acceptance in that moment I almost started to cry! I managed to hold it together but it was definitely a moment I will always cherish!”
Cub Makenna (middle), the team's vice president, was also a first- time participant in the parade and absolutely loved it.
“It was so much more than I expected it to be, overflowing with love and acceptance! I became quite emotional as I walked by the cheering public because it was just so amazing to see all these unique people in one place celebrating their love and happiness.”
At the end of our walk we accidentally bumped into a celebrity! Xian Lim, a famous vlogger from the Philippines who claimed he wanted a photo with us because, according to his friend, “it was his birthday!” This was a super cool surprise!
The team consensus was that we are definitely coming back to participate. The Calgary Pride Parade is not to be missed!
